Growth of Technical Institutions in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu witnessed an appreciable expansion and development in the field of technical education during the Eighties and Nineties. In TamilNadu during 1983 there were only 13 Engineering Colleges including the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai and the Regional Engineering College (National Institute of Technology), Tiruchirapalli.
But the growth of Technical Institutions in TamilNadu is phenomenal after the introduction of Self-Financing Institutions, a new concept of Technical Education to start new Engineering Colleges and Polytechnics to meet the growing demand for technical education in the State. The trend started from the year 1985-86 and continued till 2001-02, although to a larger extent in the later years. During 2006-07, there are 275 Engineering Colleges and 227 Polytechnics in the State. Table 1.1 indicates the growth of Technical Institutions in Tamil Nadu from 1946-2006.
The number of Engineering Colleges, which stood at 38 during 1986 has steadily increased to 275 during 2006. Also the number of Polytechnics which was 123 during 1986 has increased to 227 in 2006-07.
The establishment of Anna University in the year 1978 is a landmark in the history of Engineering Education in Tamil Nadu. All the Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu are affiliated to Anna University from the year 2001 onwards.
